The Imperial City of Toledo

Seventy kilometers from Madrid, the Imperial City of Toledo stands in rich contrast to the background formed by the crest of the encircling hills and more distant mountain ranges. Within the city, we'll reach the following destinations:

  • The Cathedral of the Cardinal Primate of Spain, the most unusual and genuinely Spanish of all the cathedrals built in Spain during the Gothic period, with marvelous wrought-iron work and the austere High Altar in gold wood.
  • One of the city's only two remaining synagogues: Santa María la Blanca and El Tránsito, both dating from the 14th century.
  • Lunch at the Cigarral de las Mercedes, a beautiful restaurant with a magnificent view of the city and the Tagus river.
  • Grupo Rociero, an Andalusian folkloric strolling group composed of 15 to 18 singers and dancers, during cocktail hour.

Monday April 29, 2002
Shopping Shuttle to Serrano Street

We'll start with the chic, cheap and stylish boutiques of Calle Serrano, a district of extraordinary shopping that stretches languorously for well over a mile. Other shopping destinations may include:

  • The Rastro's flea-market atmosphere and easy-going groove.
  • The Calle del Prado, a street devoted almost exclusively to antique shops.
  • The Plaza Mayor, the oldest square in town and another Madrid must-see.

We'll finish with dinner at The Casino Madrid, the magnificent 19th century "Members Club" where gentry and nobility gathered for business and social events. The magnificent ballroom is decorated with frescoes, paintings by famous Spanish masters such as Julio Romero de Torres, marble, crystal domes and magnificent chandeliers. Violinist duo during cocktail. Tenor and Soprano will sing Spanish Opera pieces for post dinner entertainment.
